Mountain Man Knife, Bear Slayer

One of a kind crafted like they were 200 years ago, handforged but instead of wrought iron I used a high carbon steel from an old thick circular saw, a much better steel than they had back then. Everything else is made period correct. The bone handle is from McFaddin Beach in Texas, check it out on the internet and see the history of why old bones are still found there. This piece is from a bison leg bone, approx. 10-15,000 years old. It is amazing the shape it was still in though every open space of the bone inside and out was packed with very fine sand from being buried all those years. I still have the sand I poured out of the bone when I fitted the handle. I forged the guard from copper and also used a copper pin to anchor the knife in the handle with charcoal and pitch cement. The bone is wrapped with real moose sinew made from scratch, the leather lined sheath is deer rawhide with a buckskin wrap. Waxed linen with copper nails and rivets bind it all together. Prehistoric bone from the same area was used for the centerpiece between the real blackbear bear claws. Elk antler tips protrude from the front of the sheath. Blue whiteheart antique beads adorn the bottom of the sheath. I custom made the leather lined shadow box from old recycled barn wood for this piece,  horse hoof nails and an antique nail  hold the knife and sheath securely. The picture frame wire is on the back of the box so it’s ready to go, you just need a nail to hang it up. Surely a collectors piece of heirloom quality.
